PRICE
Laying new carpet can make a massive difference in the look and functionality of your home. It’s also important you know that not all carpets are made equal. Unlike with other household purchases, quality vs price is not a linear process. Before picking the right carpet for your home you need to consider:
You have children
or indoor pets
Rental
vs home
Dream home
vs short term vs selling

Carpet prices vary greatly between ranges – from our most affordable plush polyester ranges, right up to the highest quality 100% wool ranges. As discussed, the quality of the carpet comes down to more than decadent hand feel, function is just as important.

KEEP IN MIND

that these estimates take into account a lot of assumptions:

  • The room sizes are minimum standards for each room and will most likely be different for your home
  • The carpet type is the lowest priced carpet range for each price bracket specified above
  • The installation cost includes 10mm underlay costs however this may not be the underlay thickness or material you select for your home
  • Only a specific number of rooms within the house were chosen for these examples. Obviously if you choose to carpet other rooms in your house such as the kitchen or bathroom or omit some of the rooms chosen above then this will have an effect on the quoted price
HOW MUCH CARPET DO I NEED?

Calculating the amount of carpet you will need for each room in your home is pretty straightforward as long as you understand a few key factors:
Identify the rooms which you want to carpet.
Measure the length and width of each room.
Multiply the length and width of each room to get m2.
Add all the room m2 values together to get your total m2.
Multiply your total m2 by 1.10 to account for wastage.

THERE YOU HAVE IT

The amount of carpet you will likely need for your home. Use this number to calculate a basic estimate of the total cost of the project. You can head on over to our carpets page and determine how much a particular range will cost by using the product calculator available on each carpet range page.

Risk factors to consider

Just as location is important to consider when buying a house so is location important to consider when choosing the right carpet for your home. If you are looking to maximise the long term usefulness of your investment what you are really doing is identifying the risk factors your new carpet is likely to experience. The source of these risk factors are varied and it is important to have a robust maintenance plan in place because the occasional spill is inevitable.

High traffic areas such as stairs and hallways typically wear out faster than any other room. There are multiple reasons for this including transitioning from one room to another often requires you to utilise the hallway or stairs. Not only does this make them a high traffic zone but also they are narrow causing the same areas to absorb many more footfalls than larger rooms in your house. As a result durability may be a higher priority if your house has stairs which you wish to carpet. Given that you will need to pick a carpet which works for your whole house it should not be the only factor. Fortunately we have some great fibers which are durable and still offer other desirable traits.

Carpetlink Recommendation - Highly durable options

As you might expect, pets present a unique series of challenges which can shorten the lifespan of your new carpet.

  • Pee, puke and poop
  • Dirty paws
  • Cats treating your carpet as a scratching post
  • Pets snagging their claws on loop pile styles
  • Big dogs require extra resiliency

Another challenge to your new carpet is young children (or children of any age). Most parents would agree that protecting your house from stains without breaking the bank is the ultimate goal.

Carpetlink Recommendation - Highly durable options

However, there are exceptions, as some parents prefer the all natural 100% wool option to avoid man-made chemicals. If you are looking for a cheaper option which will get you through the early years than a plush polyester carpet may be a good option as it generally has good spill resistance. Keep in mind that they do attract oils and can look prematurely matted down giving them an aged look.
